While there's a long way to go, many companies are actively improving the diversity of their workforces. But changing the diversity of who shows up to a meeting doesn't automatically translate to a change in who talks and who's voice gets heard.
In her innovative course on "How to Talk Gooder in Business and Life," Alison teaches Harvard Business students the sometimes counterintuitive conversational tools they can use to engage in high-quality, inclusive dialogue.
In this session, Alison will share insights from hot, fresh research on how to best involve people who haven't previously engaged in team meetings. (Hint: It's not what you think.) Then, we'll work in small groups to explore these ideas and practice the skills she'll share.
Join us if you want to:
- Learn how to include diverse voices in your meetings (and what not to do).
- Explore how power and personality dynamics impact conversation quality.
- Create ideas for inviting new voices in your meetings.
- Get Inspired to lead inclusive, positive, and fun meetings with all kinds of interesting, diverse folks.
Can't make the live session?
We'll share the group's discoveries and a partial recording here after each session. Due to the interactive nature of these events, we will not be able to share a full recording. If this topic really interests you, this is one of those "you had to be there" moments you won't want to miss.
About Alison Wood Brooks, Harvard Business School
Alison Wood Brooks is the O'Brien Associate Professor of Business Administration and Hellman Faculty Fellow in the Negotiation, Organizations & Markets Unit at Harvard Business School. She studies the science of conversation—why we say things we shouldn’t and don’t say things we should.
An award-winning teacher, she leads a cutting-edge MBA course called "How to talk gooder in business and life," an experiential course designed to help students hone four core conversational skills: Topic selection, Asking questions, Levity, and Kindness (TALK). She is affiliated with the Behavioral Insights Group at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership.
Unanimously voted the worst conversationalist in her family, she is definitely not doing this work out of spite.
